You are reading this article inside the very project it describes. A bit recursive, I admit, but that makes it more honest: BUSINESS, also known as business.ingello.com, is our own blog and at the same time a living example of how a company can build its own platform for expert content. When we were planning it, many people asked: "Why do You need Your own blog when there are social networks, Medium and a dozen ready-made platforms?" The answer to that question is the point of this article, because it applies not only to us but to any company that has something to say.
Rented land and a house of Your own
Publishing on social networks is like trading at someone else's market. Convenient, lots of people walk past, no need to build Your own stall. But the market owner sets the rules. Today he shows Your posts to thousands of people, tomorrow he changes the algorithm and a handful see them. Today links are allowed, tomorrow the platform decides external links hurt engagement and hides such posts. Your texts, comments and audience all live on someone else's land, and You can be evicted without notice.
Your own blog is a house on Your own land. It takes longer and costs more to build, but everything You create in it stays Yours. Articles written five years ago keep bringing readers from search. Links lead where You want them to. The audience meets not a feed where You flashed by between cats and ads, but Your world, where everything speaks about You. Social networks do not go anywhere, they become the roads leading to the house rather than the house itself.
Why a company needs expert content
For a company like ours, where an average project lasts months and costs serious money, clients do not buy on impulse. Before trusting us with the architecture of their system, they want to understand how we think. A banner ad cannot explain that. An article on why detailed competitor analysis can do harm, or on why bugs are normal, can. A client who has read three or four of our articles comes to the first meeting already trusting us and asking the right questions. The conversation starts not from zero but from the middle.
But BUSINESS has a wider goal than attracting clients. We want to formalise the experience of running a business so that small independent teams can work autonomously and well, without reinventing what has already been invented. That is what we call the decentralisation of business. Every article here is a brick in a shared library of knowledge anyone can use.
What is inside an individual blog
We could have taken a ready-made engine and installed a theme. We did not, for several reasons, and they show well when custom development is justified. Here is what we needed and what ready-made solutions did not offer in the right combination.
- Three languages with proper linking between versions, so search engines understand that the Russian, Ukrainian and English articles are the same article, and readers land in their own language straight away.
- An SEO-oriented admin panel: meta descriptions, structured data for search engines, control over page addresses, smart internal linking between articles.
- Author profiles, comments, social network integration for publishing and discussion.
- Sections that match our structure of knowledge: for companies, for startups, management, architecture, cases.
- Analytics that shows not only views but which articles actually lead to a conversation with a client.
Each item on its own can be solved with a plugin. But twenty plugins from different authors are like a house assembled from parts of twenty different construction kits. It stands as long as there is no wind. We chose a modular system on our own stack, where everything is connected meaningfully rather than with duct tape.
When a company does not need a blog
To be honest: not everyone needs their own blog. If You have nothing to say beyond "we have the best prices and an individual approach", the blog will turn into a graveyard of five articles, the latest dated the year before last. That is worse than having no blog, because the visitor sees that the company abandoned what it started. A blog is for those who have experience, an opinion and the willingness to write regularly. Not necessarily often, but regularly and to the point.
An abandoned blog says more about a company than any article in it.
Where to start
If You are thinking about a platform of Your own, start not with design but with a content plan. Write down the twenty questions clients ask You most often and the twenty misconceptions You keep dispelling in meetings. That is already forty articles. If You find them interesting to write, the platform is justified. Then decide how many languages, which sections, who the authors will be, and only then choose the technology: for a simple case a ready-made platform is enough, for a multilingual expert library with SEO and integrations it is better to design Your own.
At Ingello we build such platforms for companies, and BUSINESS serves as both our showcase and our test bench: every solution is tried here first, on our own content. And if You want to see what it looks like from the inside, You are already here. Write, colleagues, share Your experience. Knowledge that lives only in Your head dies with the project. Knowledge written down in an article keeps working for years.
